Thames Riverside Garden

Putney

2014

Riverside gardens can be a challenge even in central London as they tend to be more exposed to the elements than other city gardens. This garden design in Putney has the added challenges of being very narrow, on a slope, north-facing and with a substantial tree next door.

Our brief was to create a garden design for a couple who had previously had a much larger garden and are keen gardeners. That meant that we needed to terrace the garden with planted borders as large as we could get them. A greenhouse and kitchen garden were essential and in the first year were host to many varieties of Dahlia and a new “posh” tool shed became a focus half way down the garden.

By the house a large new terrace for entertaining has been constructed whilst a glass balustrade allows uninterrupted views from inside. At the very end a new terrace allows entertaining and relaxation with views across the River Thames.
